About Gini
Gini McKain divides her home time between Maryland, New Hampshire and Louisiana when she is not on the road covering the rapid assembly (and disassembly) of an oil drilling rig in Oklahoma, the social and recreational lives of pontoon boat owners on a lake in Arkansas, or the massive construction cranes assembling a new bridge in South Carolina. Truth be known, she spends far more time in her Ford Expedition than she does at home.
Gini began this life-long photojournalism adventure with her late husband, Dan, about 1970. Her first assignment with Dan was at Kennedy Space Center during the Apollo missions. She photographed Link-Belt cranes working on the launch tower, which had to be refurbished after each launch. At the same time, she and Dan were writing and shooting for MotorHome Magazine about the folks who drove their RVs to Cape Canaveral to watch launches, and for Houseboat Magazine covering the houseboat cruisers who plied nearby Indian River. The pair chronicled the Great Montana Centennial Cattle Drive — 2,812 head of cattle and 208 covered wagons — and produced a quarterly fishing magazine in the Florida Keys. Gini also did a stint as photographer for the U.S. House of Representatives.
As Ektachrome has given way to digital photography, Gini has embraced new technology. She uses a tiny GoPro camera to capture 4K video from angles only she can imagine, and shoots video and RAW and high-resolution JPEG stills from every conceivable perspective. She usually comes off an assignment with 500 gigabytes or more of digital images and audio recordings.
Gini now specializes in reporting on industrial equipment, boating and law enforcement. Her articles are found in American Crane & Transport (ACT), Crane Hotline, Pontoon & Deckboat Magazine, Houseboat Magazine, Sheriff Magazine, Deputy and Court Officer and MotorHome Magazine. But she also enjoys covering special events throughout the U.S. and Canada, so don’t be surprised to see her behind a camera at the Bassmaster Classic.
